As part of the ethos of the Group, and in line with our Registered Charity Status, LOHSG has been very generous over the years in providing sponsorship to worthy causes within Lancashire.
One such organisation that benefited from our sponsorship was the Lancashire Outward Bound Association, where Dr David Haworth received sponsorship for courses in the Lake District for underprivileged children from Lancashire. The photograph below shows Mark Burns, Chairman of LOHSG, making the presentation to Dr Haworth at the June 2009 North West Association of Health and Safety Groups Annual Conference and Exhibition held at the Barton Grange Hotel, Preston.
On the 21st September 2010 LOHSG held their annual AGM at the Bartle Hall Hotel, Nr Preston where the guest speaker for the Harry Banks Memorial Lecture was Chris Turner from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, who gave a very interesting talk on the work of the Agency. The following picture shows the Chairman Mark Burns congratulating Chris on his very interesting and enjoyable presentation.
The chief guest at the AGM, as a long standing Patron of the Group, was the Mayor of Preston, Councillor Albert Richardson. The following picture shows the Mayor presenting our Honorary President Robert Cunningham with a commemorative paperweight to celebrate Bob’s long association with LOHSG and health and safety in general. Also in the picture is Frank Miller, Hon Vice President and Holding Trustee of the Group.
Part of the tradition at our AGM’s is to present both St John Ambulance and British Red Cross with a donation and a shield. The shield is then competed for annually by the various sections of the relevant organisation and presented at their annual conference. The picture below shows the Mayor presenting the shield to Alex Preston from St John Ambulance. Alex is the St John representative on the LOHSG Executive Committee.
Finally we grasped the opportunity to have a group photograph taken. The picture below shows the AGM attendees in the garden at Bartle Hall.
LOHSG celebrates 80 Years!!
The year 2010 marks the 80th Anniversary of the founding of the LOHSG, as the Preston and District Industrial Accident Prevention Group. The month of October was chosen to celebrate this event, and a celebratory lunch was held on the 14th of October at the Villa in Wrea Green, which was enjoyed by all those attending.
Our Honorary President, Robert Cunningham , had been active prior to the lunch being held in writing to various bodies informing them of the Group’s 80th Anniversary, and at the lunch was able to read out letters he had received in return from Buckingham Palace, from Prince Philip at Balmoral, from Brendan Barbour, TUC General Secretary, and the Prime Minister’s Office. Copies of these letters are available to view at the following links.
Our 600th Meeting
On the 17th May 2011 the Group celebrated its 600th meeting since its inauguration in 1930. A buffet lunch was supplied for all members at the St John Ambulance HQ in Garstang Road, Preston prior to the Group meeting in the afternoon and many members attended. There was a welcome address by the Commander of St John Ambulance in the Lancashire area, Brigadier Ian Robertson, where he outlined the history of the St John Ambulance movement.
